Gaza Board of Peace Inevitable Failure

Following Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023, Israel pursued military and diplomatic efforts in Gaza to destroy resistance movements like Hamas and create security zones. As reported by Fadi Zatari of Anadolu Agency, Israel shifted to negotiation after facing global solidarity with Palestine and narrative losses. Palestinian groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front showed steadfast resistance rooted in national support.

The Board of Peace director, Nickolay Mladenov, presented a plan in Cairo for Hamas’s gradual disarmament over eight months in exchange for Israeli withdrawal and Gaza Administrative Committee entry. According to Anadolu Agency, Hamas claims full implementation of the first phase, while Israel fulfilled only a small part amid daily assassinations, bombings, restrictions, occupation of over half of Gaza, and an unlifted blockade. Any agreement without rebuilding and blockade removal appears hollow to Palestinians.

What Are the Criticisms?

Hamas questions trust in Israeli and American promises if resistance disarms. As detailed by Fadi Zatari of Anadolu Agency, the Board lacks enforcement power and binding authority, with no consequences for Israel’s ceasefire violations. It functions more as diplomatic theater than a real conflict-resolution mechanism.

The U.S.-drafted UN Security Council Resolution 2803 mandates demilitarization, stabilization, and reconstruction through 2027, but faces criticism for vagueness on Hamas removal scope. Eight Muslim-majority nations including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and others support the Board, drawing accusations of undermining Palestinian self-determination. Critics argue it legitimizes Israeli control and prioritizes geopolitics over rights.

What Lies Ahead for Gaza?

Potential scenarios include status quo with no reconstruction, leaving 1.4 million of 2.2 million residents without basic healthcare amid humanitarian catastrophe. Israeli media reports preparations to resume war for Hamas disarmament, possibly under Netanyahu to boost popularity before elections. Anadolu Agency notes Israel’s reliance on violence across fronts toward “Greater Israel” goals, with global distractions like U.S.-Israeli actions in Iran diverting attention.

Israel occupies much of Gaza, violations continue, and the Board shows limited impact on ground realities despite diplomatic efforts. Palestinian resistance persists without surrender signals, as resistance legitimacy ties to arms retention among Palestinians. Ongoing blockade and destruction highlight unaddressed core issues in peace initiatives.
